Rosen Bastion – An outer fortification of the Loviisa Fortress
A bastion from Loviisa’s 18th-century fortifications along Kuhlefeltinkatu. A free outdoor attraction, with the Ehrensvärd Trail showcasing history and nature in the surrounding area.
The Rosen Bastion is one of the two surviving bastions of the Loviisa fortifications. Construction of the fortifications began in 1748 under the direction of Augustin Ehrensvärd to protect the town, but only part of the extensive plan was ever carried out. Rosen and Ungern, along with their associated earthworks, form the current fortress area. You can explore the outer area of Rosen on your own along Kuhlefeltinkatu. Signs along the Ehrensvärd Trail, which winds through the fortress grounds, provide information about the area’s history and nature. The entire wooded loop is approximately two kilometers long; there is also a shorter option available in the area. Admission is free. This announcement pertains to exploring the Rosen outdoor area; access to indoor facilities or guided tours is not permitted. Please follow local signs and access restrictions, and be mindful of how the terrain and weather may affect your movement. The contact information provided is for the Visit Kotka-Hamina tourist information office serving Loviisa; it does not refer to staff on duty at the site.
