J. L. Runeberg's Tombstone

The memorial to Johan Ludvig and Fredrika Runeberg, designed by Ferdinand Öhman in 1888, on a hill in the Näsinmäki Cemetery.

The tomb of Johan Ludvig and Fredrika Runeberg is located on top of a high mound at the Näsinmäki Cemetery in Porvoo. Designed by Ferdinand Öhman, the black granite monument was unveiled in 1888. Beneath it is a burial vault carved into the rock, where Johan Ludvig was buried in 1877 and Fredrika in 1879. Fredrika’s name is inscribed on the other side of the monument. The monument is part of the city’s Runeberg-themed cultural sites and the Näsinmäki history walk. It is a different work than the statue of Walter Runeberg in Runeberg Park. On the cemetery map, the grave is marked as site 4, in section 22, near the Runeberg Gate. Näsinmäentie 5 is the address for entering the cemetery; to reach the memorial itself, follow the paths through the grounds. The cemetery is open to the public 24 hours a day. Please move quietly and respect the peace of the graves and the burials. Vehicles may only travel on the roads designated for them.
