The Fortifications of Vallikallio
Outlying fortifications from World War I that have been preserved in the Vallikallio park area. A self-guided walking tour in Leppävaara; entry to the caves is not permitted.
The Vallikallio fortifications are located north of Leppävaara in Espoo, in the Vallikallio park area. Positions 5–8 of the XXVIII base, built during World War I, feature combat and communication trenches carved into the rock, as well as concrete shelters. Visitors can explore the fortifications visible from the outside on a self-guided walk through the city-maintained park area. Ajurinkatu is the name of the access road; the sign does not indicate the entrance to a residential building. The original map point is located approximately 42 meters from the reference point of Defense Position XXVIII:7; these points represent the same fortification complex within the park area, and the map marker does not indicate the exact entrance. According to the registry, there are rocks blocking the entrances to the caves. Do not enter closed caves or private yards. Due to rocky terrain, pits, and partially damaged structures, stay on designated paths and follow the area’s signs. Accessibility, winter maintenance, and visiting hours have not been confirmed. The phone number is the City of Espoo’s general switchboard; no on-site staff are on duty at this location.
