Helsinki City Theater’s guest performance of Marie Jones’s *Stones in His Pockets* is on its farewell tour!

Starring Martti Suosalo and Mika Nuojua, *Stones in His Pockets* had its Finnish-language premiere on October 24, 2002, at Studio Pasila. Written by Irish playwright Marie Jones and directed by Pentti Kotkaniemi, the production has drawn massive audiences over the course of its more than 20-year run.

“The play’s success is, of course, a confidence-boosting, dreamlike, and encouraging experience, but ultimately it’s just a play that’s performed and taken on tour across Finland—a child among children. We can’t pat ourselves on the back under this pretext, but it’s good training for acting, and it seems to resonate with the audience as well. “The best and most rewarding part of this is the audience, their reactions, and that sense of reciprocity—they get something out of it, and so do we,” Martti Suosalo sums up. “Yes, and even though it’s obviously great that this production is making theater history, in a way you don’t really think of it that way. We always take it one performance at a time, and we do it specifically for that audience,” Mika Nuojua continues.

The play tells the story of a film shoot in the Irish countryside, where locals Charlie Conlon (Suosalo) and Jake Quinn (Nuojua) work as extras. The duo switches roles on the fly, playing not only the main characters but also all of the play’s approximately fifteen other roles, regardless of age or gender.
